Some Republicans and several White House reporters came to Sanders defense Sunday morning

Members of the Trump administration and even some journalists called her out for the bawdy performance, with former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, describing it simply as a "disgrace." "To the many thousands of people who couldn't get in, I cherish you....and will be back!"

Wolf defended her routine and insisted critics had mistakenly assumed she was targeting Sanders' physical appearance. If anything she saved her more scathing remarks for Kellyanne Conway and Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

A year after the White House boycotted the annual dinner - and with President Donald Trump holding a competing campaign-style rally in MI - director of strategic communications Mercedes Schlapp and her husband, conservative activist Matt Schlapp, were among those who marched out of the ballroom at the Washington Hilton long before Wolf's keynote routine was over.

Others panned Wolf including CNN's Jeff Zeleny who said it was "an embarrassment in the room and surely to the audience at home".

The television pictures showing President Donald Trump at a MI rally asking why he would want to be in a room full of people that hate him and Wolf's diatribes may have reinforced the narrative that elite journalists are out of touch.

Margaret Talev, president of the White House Correspondents' Association, in a statement, praised Wolf for her diverse background and for supporting the First Amendment and independent journalism.

Trump took a shot at Wolf on Sunday morning.

"It is kind of insane that the Trump campaign was in contact with Russian Federation when the Hillary campaign wasn't even in contact with Michigan", Wolf said early in her routine.

Michelle Wolf's performance didn't have everyone laughing when it came to Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Donald Trump: Protests planned as visit to United Kingdom confirmed for July 13

The organization's leader said she regretted that Michelle Wolf's routine may end up defining an evening that was created to rally around journalism.

"Great evening last night in Washington, Michigan", Trump tweeted. The crudeness towards Sarah Huckabee Sanders was a gift to the White House.

Anthony Scaramucci, who was Sanders' boss for 11 days a year ago during his short-lived tenure as White House communications director, also came to her defense.

At the dinner, Wolf joked, "I'm never really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders".

Saturday night showed why it is time to put the White House Correspondents Dinner out of its misery.

But there was a fierce response on social media from people who said, in essence, the correspondents association hired an edgy comedian.

"You guys love breaking news, and you did it, you broke it!"

It will be interesting to see if Trump has the courage to attend next year's WHCD. "So you can not shut me up unless you have Michael Cohen wire me $130,000".

Peter Baker, of the New York Times, seemed to sum up the feeling of many journalists after Wolf's appearance.
