Australia believes day-night Test cricket is the future of the sport and perhaps the only way to save the format despite boom television ratings and record crowds.
A much-awaited Australian summer will see the country hosting India this time around and the tournament naturally headlines the Australian 2018-19 global schedule.
The Gabba Test however has been shunted to the Australia Day weekend in January when Sri Lanka will play a day-night fixture in the first Test of a two-Test series featuring another game in Canberra.
"It is our preference that we play India in a day-night test match in Adelaide, but we are still working through this detail and hope to have an answer on this in the coming weeks", Sutherland said in a media release.
Cricket Australia confirmed on Monday that Adelaide Oval will be the venue for the series-opening test against India but has yet to strike an agreement with the Indian board (BCCI) on staging the match under lights.
"If you look at the last Test match played there during the Ashes series we had over 200,000 people there".
Apart from the Test series, India will also play three ODIs and as many T20Is.

India's tour of Australia will go underway with the first T20 worldwide at the Gabba, at the Queensland capital Brisbane, on November 21.
