St. Charles North came in at no. 18 and and St. Charles East at no. 23, according to the national magazine's annual list, released Wednesday. Schools are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals on the basis of state assessments, graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college.
The top ranking high school in the state is Central Magnet School in Murfreesboro.
Massachusetts, California and Maryland rank one, two and three, respectively, with the highest percentage of eligible schools that received gold and silver medals.
Those practices help ensure the success of the school's exclusively low-income student population, he said.
What other schools made the cut? The top five schools all earned gold ratings.
International Studies Charter High ranked third in the state (26th overall), and International Studies Preparatory Academy ranked seventh (62nd overall).

The new rankings show some schools slipping within Utah, relative to the rest of the nation. ". Our staff and our students are always finding new ways to reinvent themselves and improve on what we do as a proud public high school in Kentucky".
The methodology used in the ranking formula by U.S. News was based on multiple factors, including enrollment, graduation rates, diversity, participation in free and reduced-price lunch programs and the results of state testing.
"Where we are in the rankings is never the focus", he said.
