The Memorial Fund maintains the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, which contains the names of 21,541 officers who have died in the line of duty throughout US history.

There are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers now in the U.S. Since the first recorded death in 1791, over 20,000 law enforcement officers-representing cities, counties, states, and federal agencies in the United States-have died in the line of duty. "These officers willingly put their lives on the line each day when they leave home, never knowing if they will return safely to their families or if their grieving loved ones will hear their names called at the next annual Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial Service".

The annual service is a tradition for the department during National Law Enforcement Memorial Week.

Williams, U.S. Attorney for the District of OR, recognize the service and sacrifice of federal, state, local, and tribal police officers on the occasion of National Police Week, and commented Monday on the FBI's 2017 Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted report. The memorial now has more than 21,000 names engraved.
