Wearing his father's badge, the boy returned to Sullivan Elementary School with dozens of cops by his side, WNDU reported.

Heartwarming footage shows the youngster walking to the doors of his school, wearing his dad's badge around his neck, flanked by dozens of officers standing in solidarity for the courageous little boy.

Dakota, the 5-year-old son of the late Terre Haute patrolman Rob Pitts, only asked if one of his dad's friends could ride in his father's police vehicle on his way to school, according to FOX59.

Detective Les Hamm said it was the least officers could do for their former colleague Rob Pitts, who was shot and killed while trying to apprehend a murder suspect on May 4 in Terre Haute. The officers also gave him his very own SWAT T-shirt and badge upon his arrival.

"He will definitely know his dad was a hero", Pitts' sister Kelli Jones told the affiliate.

Christopher Wolfe, 21, was suspected of shooting and killing a 26-year-old man at a home in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Dakota Pitts is just five years old.

Wolfe was armed with a handgun and fired at the officers, striking Pitts, court documents said.

"Officer Pitts was a 16 year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department". He was a fine officer and he was going toward danger to help his fellow officers apprehend a homicide suspect, ' he said.

He is the first Terre Haute officer to die on duty since July 11, 2011.
