Microsoft Surface Hub 2 may actually make videoconferencing cool

Microsoft announces the Surface Hub 2 with 50.5-inch display

Microsoft Surface Hub 2 is a 50.5-inch 4K Display for the Next Generation Conference Rooms

The new device will be tested with select commercial customers before being made available for purchase in 2019. The new Surface Hub 2 will have the capability of tiling which simply joins multiple Surface hub 2 allowing users to display multiple pieces of content side-by-side. It has 4K rotating cameras, speakers and the far-field microphone arrays Microsoft has been pushing (for Cortana).

Another nifty addition to this year's Surface Hub is the fact that it can be employed in the portrait orientation as well, unlike the previous one which was restricted to a landscape position.

A few weeks back, Microsoft announced that the Surface Hub stock was running low and that the device would soon be almost impossible to buy. That said, Microsoft appears to be shooting for the best of both worlds with a "sleeker, more agile, and more affordable" device for collaboration. Microsoft will likely share more information before launch, which is expected sometime in 2019.

Microsoft debuted the first-generation Surface Hub in January, 2015, at the remarkable event that also introduced the world to the HoloLens. Currently, the only 4K version (3,840 by 2,160 pixels) of the Surface Hub is the 84-inch model. I eagerly look forward to getting some hands-on time with this hardware in the near future as the promise on paper is encouraging and I can only hope that the device in practice holds up to the high bar the Surface brand has established. I am not exactly sure what Microsoft considers to be a competitive device. Instead, he says the Surface Hub 2 is easier to move around in your workplace thanks to a collaboration with Steelcase. When mounted on a wall, up to four Surface Hub 2s can be daisy-chained, allowing them to function separately, or project a cohesive picture that straddles more than one Surface Hub 2. The one on the Surface Hub 2 takes some cues from those on Surface Studio and Surface Book, said Seiler, but is still unique, as it is designed for "dynamic rotation". The new Surface Hub software will support multi-user sign in, include native Microsoft Teams integration, and more. Can be used in either landscape or portrait mode.

Surface Hub 1's operating system is called "Windows 10 Team" and based on Windows 10 Enterprise, but customized with some features unique to the device. With this in mind, we did learn two specific things about the display that sets the Surface Hub 2 apart.

Seiler said Microsoft will be providing more details about Surface Hub 2 over the coming months.
