Heavy rain, flooding expected in South Florida over Memorial Day Weekend

The first named tropical weather system of the 2018 hurricane season has formed.

In Volusia and Flagler counties, the wet blanket over Memorial Day weekend activities is forecast to bring up to four inches of rain through Wednesday, although even more rainfall is possible in some locations.

As of Friday morning, the National Hurricane Center says there is a 90% chance we have our first tropical depression or Tropical Storm Alberto in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by Saturday.

"However, once over water, it should develop into an organised tropical or subtropical storm system during the weekend". Winds of 40 mph extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center.

"A tropical storm is likely to form in the eastern Gulf this weekend and track generally northward".

Since 1995, the Atlantic and Caribbean have seen "very active" seasons, said Bell, as a decades-long climate trend in the Atlantic Ocean has kept water temperatures warmer, contributing to a higher number of storms.

Tropical storm watches are in effect for Tulum to Cabo Catoche, Mexico, and the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. At that point it might become stronger, although no strengthening is expected on Monday.

Rainfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches with maximum amounts of 12 inches are possible across the Florida Keys and southern and southwestern Florida.

That system on Sunday and Monday likely will continue moving north and dumping heavy rains along the Gulf Coast.

Over the next 24 hours, what was once known as Invest 90L will move north into the Gulf of Mexico. Florida has already had heavy rain this month. Rip currents will also be a concern at affected beaches over the busy holiday weekend, especially along the northern Gulf Coast.

Just previous year, we had a named storm - Tropical Storm Arlene - east of Bermuda in April.

Finally, the rainfall forecast from now until early next week from the National Weather Service shows the extensive area with the potential for heavy rain covering all of Florida and the northern Gulf Coast, including South Florida. All areas east of the Mississippi River across the Southeast have a chance to see flooding due to Alberto from this weekend into at least mid-week next week.
