Teacher, teen girl in critical condition after shooting at Indiana middle school

A male student left class Friday morning, returned, and opened fire inside a classroom, injuring Seaman and a 13-year-old female student.

"Our science teacher immediately ran at him, swatted a gun out of his hand and tackled him to the ground", seventh-grader Ethan Stonebraker told The Associated Press.

The shooting comes just one week after 10 people were killed during a shooting rampage in Santa Fe, Texas.

Parents can pick up West Middle School students at Noblesville High School, which was dismissed at 1 p.m. Parents of children at other schools can pick up their children at any time, but regular dismissals and buses were scheduled for those facilities.

"I got a message and a call from my daughter that's in eighth grade at West Middle School saying that there was an active shooter and that they were to evacuate the building", Landis said.

One person was injured but it was not clear if that person had been injured by a gunshot, Chatterton said.

Noblesville, which is about 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis, is home to about 50,000 people.

The middle school was on lockdown part of the morning, said Jackie Chatteron, a receptionist for the school district. However, he did say that a local high school was being monitored by police because of a recent "threat" made against staff and pupils.
