Les Bleus benefited from the competition's first use of video assistant referee technology when they were awarded a debatable second-half penalty, which was converted by Antoine Griezmann.

When he scored a sensational freekick goal against Russian Federation last March - on what would have been his father's 80th birthday - Pogba lifted his French No 6 jersey to reveal a white T-shirt carrying the message: "Happy birthday Papa".

"He was standing very close in the moment of the penalty [incident] and he directly said "no penalty", he directly said "go on".

A second-guess from a referee, some vague video and cruel luck denied Australia in a 2-1 defeat against France at the World Cup, according to coach Bert van Marwijk. The match was decided when Paul Pogba's deflected shot bounced over the line - a goal verified by goalline technology.

Samuel Umtiti was involved in one of the most freaky moments at the World Cup so far in France's match against Australia.

Supporters were excited to see their favorites perform as intended, and will be anticipating a grander show for the duration of the World Cup that was left. The French tactician fielded an inexperienced starting XI, which would have been better suited to playing a less physical side than Australia and took too long to add some experienced heads as substitutes.

As is stands however, VAR is only causing confusion and in Australia's case, more and more heartache when it comes to the round ball game.

Australia bounced back superbly from that setback, though, and were level just four minutes later. "Our opponents always play deep against us and we need to find a way to play better in those kind of matches".

"He will definitely start, Didier Deschamps is a big fan of his talents but he has to play a very specific role for France if he is to be effective", Desailly told FFT. I would rather play badly and win this game than play well and not win it.

VAR was on hand again as Peru were awarded a penalty in their game against Denmark. The team's defence is solid and they were unlucky in the end.
