The 37-year-old's daughter was born weighing 7lb 3oz at Auckland City Hospital on Thursday.

That may include a disciplinary matter - all Cabinet ministers serve at the pleasure of the Prime Minister regardless of the party they're with.

"Like the rest of the country we welcome the news of the birth of a healthy baby and are naturally delighted for the new parents".

The intervening months have seen a frenzy of excitement from New Zealanders, many of whom took to the web on Thursday to express their happiness.

Ardern shared a photo of her family on Instagram.

Revealing her pregnancy last January, she said: 'Lots of people juggle a lot of things in their personal and private lives, and I'm not unusual in that.

These are the kinds of practical arrangements working women make the world over - the novelty here is that it is a prime minister who is making them.
