The wildfire raging in and around Redding, California, has killed at least six people and destroyed hundreds of buildings. They added the individual had not complied with an evacuation order.

Authorities had not reopened any evacuated neighborhoods where fires raged due to safety and ongoing investigations and urged people to be patient, saying they would soon let residents back.

On Saturday, Redding police said they were searching for 17 people still unaccounted for two days afterward.

Bledsoe's granddaughter, Amanda Woodley, said on Facebook the elderly woman desperately put a wet blanket over the children as their home burned.

Together, they have destroyed at least six homes, were threatening more than 10,000 structures, forced the evacuation of a hospital in Lakeport and charred nearly 56,000 acres of mostly scrub and wildlands. Two other towns with about 5,000 people are also under mandatory evacuation.

Some evacuations orders have been lifted around a Northern California wildfire area near the city of Redding.

Wildfires around the state have forced roughly 50,000 people from their homes, said Lynne Tolmachoff, a Cal Fire spokeswoman. The fire was 5 percent contained by Sunday morning, with advances expected before nightfall.
