U.S. Vice President Mike Pence speaks at a Wednesday ceremony in Hawaii, to receive the alleged remains of U.S. servicemen killed in the Korean War.

US Vice President Mike Pence welcomed the return of the remains of US soldiers who had been killed in the Korean War in Hawaii on Wednesday, saying his country will work more on the repatriation of war dead.

"We see today as tangible progress to achieve peace on the Korean peninsula", Pence said.

"Whosoever emerges from these aircraft today begins a new season of hope for the families of our missing fallen", Pence said.

If John Kaakimaka's remains are ever identified, his family wants him to be buried in a cemetery at the base of Diamond Head crater in Honolulu because that's where his parents and brothers were laid to rest, Hanwell Kaakimaka said.

From the base, the remains will be taken to a laboratory in Hawaii for possible identification, with the goal of matching them with any of the 7,697 US personnel who remain are unaccounted for after the Korean War.

Sixteen other United Nations member countries fought alongside US service members on behalf of South Korea.

After 65 years of conflict, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made a commitment to US President Donald Trump and returned the remains of the fallen.

The U.S. military will take the remains to a laboratory at the base for identification.

United Nations Command returned 55 cases of remains from North Korea to Osan Air Base, South Korea, July 27, 2018.

The remains will be examined at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, and experts there will be responsible for identifying the remains. F-16s flew in formation over the ceremony to honor the missing soldiers who fought in the Korean War, before each casket was brought in by a van - six caskets at a time.

Pence mentioned that along with the denuclearization commitment Trump had obtained from Kim during the two leaders' historic summit in Singapore on June 12, Trump had also "secured a promise from Chairman Kim to return the remains of all fallen U.S. service members lost in North Korea".

DPAA deputy director Rear Admiral Jon Kreitz said he saw the remains transfer as an important step that will lead to more recovery operations in North Korea.

During the summit, Mr Kim also agreed to "work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" in return for Mr Trump's promise of security guarantees.

The Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.
