In all, over the weekend, there were 33 shooting incidents. An 11-year-old boy, a 13-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old girl were also hit over the course of the weekend's bloodbath.

"Detectives are working around the clock to investigate the incidents, build a timeline of events and identify any shooter", said Waller.

Of the wounded, the oldest was 62 years of age and the youngest was 11. Over the 2018 Memorial Day weekend, teens ran down Michigan Avenue, punching people and vandalizing stores; a group of eight to ten boys knocked a fifteen-year-old boy to the ground, then stomped on his head and kicked his ribs, back, and face, before emptying his pockets and taking his shoes.

Most of the shootings are connected to gang violence in the city.

"This is a small subset of individuals who think they can play by their own rules because they continue to get a slap on the wrist when we arrest them".

Johnson said witnesses who come forward would be given protection.

Giuliani also encouraged Chicagoans to support Garry McCarthy, the city's former police superintendent and now candidate challenging Mayor Rahm Emanuel - though he misspelled McCarthy's first name. "We are a better city". The people who were shot weren't cooperating with investigators, and the circumstances of the shooting weren't immediately known. "We just have too many guns on the streets of Chicago".

"Wednesday we announced a number of businesses that are going to be part of the neighborhood opportunity fund that create the most important part of our neighborhood economy", Emanuel said.

The violence peaked early Sunday, including one shooting on the city's South Side that injured eight people.

Most of the shootings happened in poor neighborhoods on the West and South Sides where gangs are entrenched, said Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, standing next to the mayor.

- A series of citywide shootings Sunday has left at least four people dead and 38 others wounded in just over 15 hours.

But Waller said so far this year, there has been a reduction in shootings of over 30 percent in Chicago, while murders are down by 25 percent.

Earlier this month, the Chicago Tribune reported that there had been 532 fewer shootings this year compared to 2017.

Two people were killed and 28 were wounded between midnight and 3 a.m., including at least 13 teenagers.
