Officers Const. Robb Costello and Const. Sara Burns were identified as two of four victims of the shootings in New Brunswick's capital city on Friday morning.
Police said Friday that a 48-year-old Fredericton man was in custody and being treated for serious injuries. It's unclear at this time if there are more suspects.
Of the four people killed in this morning's shootings on Brookside Drive, two were Fredericton Police officers.
"Our thoughts and prayers are now with the families, friends and colleagues of the two courageous Police officers who gave their lives in order to protect and serve and with the families of the other two victims of this senseless act of violence", said a tweet from the city of Fredericton on behalf of Mayor Mike O'Brien, the City Council and other municipal employees. Burns had been on the force for two years.
"I can't comment on today's events because they're still so new and so raw", said Goodale.
About five minutes later, he could hear similar noises near his home.
"[He] and his wife were involved with several community organizations, fundraising, a major part of the community", Mr. Davidson said.
Jeff Magnussen, general manager of a golf course near the site of the shooting, said by phone that he heard multiple gunshots before 8 a.m. local time.
Police found a man and a woman shot at the scene and set up a perimeter and a lockdown of the area, he said.
"It sounded like the first one came from right outside my bedroom window. I can't even fathom what the families of the victims are going through", he said in an afternoon interview with CTV News Channel.

A vigil was to be held Friday evening at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church.
"Thank you to all those Canadians for their condolences and their thoughts", said New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant. To have it happen so close to us is shocking. "I still am in complete shock, and I don't really quite know how to process it".
The circumstances of the shooting in Fredericton, about 75 kilometers (45 miles) from the border between Canada and the USA state of ME, were not immediately clear.
In June 2014, RCMP Constables Doug Larche, Fabrice Gevaudan and Dave Ross were killed in a shooting rampage by Justin Bourque. Constables Eric Dubois and Darlene Goguen were also injured when Bourque went hunting police officers in a Moncton neighbourhood.
New Brunswick had three homicide shootings in the entire year of 2016, according to Statistics Canada.
