Michigan's primary came on a day when five states were conducting voting, including a closely watched special election in suburban Columbus, Ohio, where a Democrat was making a strong run in a solidly Republican district.
Gretchen Whitmer, a former leader in the MI state Senate, captured the Democratic nomination for governor Tuesday night and will face off against the state's Republican attorney general, Bill Schuette, in a race that looms as a pivotal test of whether Democrats can reclaim power in a state President Donald Trump won two years ago.
Schuette, the attorney general, is asking for one debate in the Detroit media market, another in Grand Rapids and a third in either Flint, Lansing or Traverse City.
Call it Michigan's pink and blue wave. She said while the president's party typically faces rough sledding in his first midterm election, Michigan Republicans have a better record of getting out the vote than Democrats do.
Schuette was the only candidate to get President Donald Trump's endorsement.
Calling Gretchen Whitmer the most liberal member of anything is something her Democratic competitors would have contested during the primary. They've pushed anti-choice. They've cut us out of the debate about everything from our health care to our water.
"They come to the race and will tell us, 'We really believe in electing women because women will be more civil and get more done in Washington, '" Slotkin said.

Schuette also thanked his competitors in the Republican party for their commitment to the state and their service to MI.
Schuette, who had been accused by Calley of misusing his public office for political business, also sought to bring Republicans together and criticized Whitmer.
Though Whitmer may still choose a male running mate, the Democrats are fielding women for governor, Senate, state attorney general and secretary of state.
"Alright, can she name any of them?" he added.
Vice President Mike Pence, who sought to unify Republicans at a post-primary rally in Grand Rapids, said the "blue wall" crumbled in MI with Trump's 2016 win - the first for a GOP presidential nominee in decades.
"I would love to have a real conversation with you about the issues", Mr. Shapiro said.
