Other Republicans were more charitable.
In a statement of support reported by multiple outlets, a dozen former officials including Central Intelligence Agency directors dating back to the 1980s declared that "security clearances should be based on national security concerns and not political views".
Brennan's loss of a security clearance was an unprecedented act of retribution against a vocal critic and politicizes the federal government's security clearance process.
This also applies to numerous other people the White House has said it is reviewing for the potential revocation of security clearances.
Brennan himself pushed back against the move, calling it "desperate" and "politically motivated".
"By issuing such a statement, Mr Trump was not only encouraging a foreign nation to collect intelligence against a United States citizen, but also openly authorising his followers to work with our primary global adversary against his political opponent", Brennan wrote. They said it "has nothing to do with who should and should not hold security clearances - and everything to do with an attempt to stifle free speech".
In his statement, Trump said Brennan was engaging in "increasingly frenzied commentary", and was continuing "to make a series of unfounded and outrageous allegations".
Trump told The Wall Street Journal in an interview Wednesday that his decision - and threat to revoke other clearances - stemmed from his frustrations with the ongoing investigation into Russian election meddling and potential collusion with his campaign.

Prosecutors, Defense To Offer Closing Arguments In Paul Manafort Fraud Trial
Gates testified that he helped Manafort commit crimes in an effort to lower his tax bill and fund his lavish lifestyle. Paul Manafort and his legal team decided on Tuesday not to present defense witnesses in his trial on fraud charges.
Mr Brennan accused Donald Trump of withdrawing his clearance to distract from problems he is encountering and that he is following a playbook used by tyrants, despots and dictators.
"I call it the rigged witch hunt, [it] is a sham". "And these people led it!"
Sanders, however, denied during the briefing that the revocation of Brennan's security clearance was tied to the former Obama administration official's frequent criticism of the president and his administration.
Before he left office, Brennan was open about how he felt about the current US President and said: "'I don't think he has a full appreciation of Russian capabilities, Russia's intentions and actions that they are undertaking in many parts of the world".
There was no suggestion that Brennan has leaked classified information.
McRaven, a retired four-star admiral who oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid, directly addressed Trump in a Washington Post op-ed published online Thursday. "And that is a disgusting message to be sending to folks who are there to tell you objective truth". "It was nothing short of treasonous", he said of the President's press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July.
UPDATE: After tweeting about Brennan and Blumenthal, Trump followed it up with more direct from Fox News quotes. "Nevertheless I do not see the grounds for revoking his security clearance, unless there was some disclosure of classified information of which I am unaware", she said.
