Storm season peaks: Hurricane Florence still far from landfall, uncertainty remains for East Coast

Hurricane Florence's Path Shifts Westward, Putting Bermuda On Notice

Hours after being upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane, Florence was back down to tropical storm status, but forecasters say it will likely get stronger over the weekend as it gets closer to Bermuda.

"Interests near and along the U.S. East Coast should monitor the progress of Florence through the weekend and ensure they have their hurricane plans in place", the weather service cautioned.

Right now, little or no impact will be felt in North Georgia from the storm.

As of Wednesday, the hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour, making it a Category 3 storm.

A more pressing concern locally this weekend will be potential coastal flooding in Flagler and St. Johns counties, the National Weather Service said.

It could become a major hurricane, which is Category 3 or higher, by Tuesday.

The current forecast track keeps Florence drifting west before taking a slight curve to the west-northwest early on Sunday.

The declaration waived transportation rules "to help farmers harvest and transport their crops more quickly," Cooper said in a statement "While it's still too early to know the storm's path, we know we have to be prepared".

If the storm did hit the US, it would be an unprecedented event: Since 1851, 33 named storms have been within 100 miles of Florence's current position, and none of these storms made USA landfall, according to Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach.

The Emergency Measures Organisation, which is expected to meet on Monday, announced that public transport, schools and government offices would operate as normal that day.

It's not yet clear whether Florence will threaten the United States, although forecast tracks show it could make landfall along the Carolinas.

The peak of hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean is September 10, and right on schedule, the Atlantic Basin has come to life with numerous areas of concern. Again, much can change, but with our main models having Florence lurking off of the mid-Atlantic we must bring our concern up a notch.
