Andrew Cuomo, Cynthia Nixon face off in NY gubernatorial primary

Gov. Andrew Cuomo won a Democratic primary for NY governor, beating back a spirited challenge on his left flank from actor and activist Cynthia Nixon. They insisted that it would be a "major embarrassment and significant under-performance" were he to win with less than a 41 percentage point lead, the spread in a recent Siena poll.

Cuomo's ticket is also in danger of being thwarted by insurgent candidates. Cuomo has tacked left in hopes that he can inspire a similar level of excitement among his supporters. The primary is scheduled for September 13. "It's still going to be a low-turnout election".

Nixon also seemed to be gaining support for her stance on fixing the subways. NY is the only state in the country which has separate election days for federal and statewide primaries.

A similar dynamic could repeat itself in 2018. At his debate with Nixon, he said he would serve a full term as governor unless "God strikes me dead". NY also does not have early voting. "There's no way to predetermine who the electorate will be and that's why certain local races you have huge challenges in predicting results", he said.

The contest even featured dueling last minute endorsements from feuding rappers Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. After Minaj endorsed Cuomo and his slate, Cardi B threw her support behind Nixon and Williams in an Instagram post.

As for Nixon, honestly, she probably has a pretty advanced palate, so I trust her judgement. "That's why we play the game and why we have elections".

In advertisements and speeches, Mr. Cuomo touted a strict gun-control bill as well as infrastructure investments around the state, including a replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge over the Hudson River. Party Director Geoff Berman later said the mailer was a mistake, and Cuomo's spokeswoman acknowledged that two former aides volunteering on the campaign were behind the piece. A Democratic Party mailer implied she was anti-Semitic, sparking a furious backlash but Cuomo pleaded innocent. The mailer had charged that she had been "silent on the rise of anti-Semitism" and attempted to link her to the ongoing movement to boycott Israel.

Cynthia is battling incumbent Andrew Cuomo in this week's Democratic Primary, but sounds like T.I. would love to see her go Green Party.

While he may have won, Cuomo, a former USA housing secretary and son of the late Gov. Mario Cuomo, did not escape the primary unscathed.

Cynthia Nixon's sweet talk got her flak on the campaign trail. "Sometimes primary voting is all about sending a message", Cunningham added.

Cuomo followed up by saying he reached out to Democratic officials to "make sure it doesn't happen again", and he repeated those comments again on Monday.

Cuomo and Nixon agree that NY should adopt single-payer healthcare, but they differ on how to get there. By now, his failure to do so creates a liability among voters on the left.

Nixon went further, pushing for single payer health care, drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants, higher taxes on the rich, and a massive boost in education spending. But she's invited to my next bbq/family gathering and if she's running for anything... "She was a fine actor, but not a great gubernatorial candidate", he said. "I just think that there's been a lot of missed opportunities".

The former Sex and the City star ran against Cuomo on a progressive platform and called him out on his leadership and record. And progressives may not be as powerful in a statewide primary as in certain districts. Cuomo denied all knowledge of the mailer's contents.

Not only does he need to win big, but his lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, is facing a tight race. The question remains whether that wave will be enough to carry Nixon to victory. Four Democrats are facing off for the party's nomination in a race that polls have shown to be very close.
